In Year 5 and 6 this year we are studying the following Cornerstones themes. We hope you enjoy looking at our work.

Autumn Term/Tymor yr Hydref 2016

Energy

This project has a science focus and teaches children about different types and sources of energy and the social, environmental and economic impact of these. At the heart of this project children write letters to communicate with a range of fictional and real organisations and develop additional skills in writing explanations and making scientific recordings. In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by creating a micro wind farm in the school grounds. In this project the children will learn:

About different sources of energy;

How these work and what forces they use;

About the uses of different power and energy sources in our everyday lives;

About the impact of energy sources on humans, economy and the environment;

About the generation of Energy from Wales;

How to carry out fair tests;

 • How to make a range of models to generate energy;

How to record and draw inferences from data;

How to write letters in a formal style.

We went on a trip to Rhondda Heritage Park to learn about coal. We went down a mine to see and feel what it would be like if we were miners.We also looked at the things that miners use and what they take down the mine.

Spring Term/Tymor y Gwanwyn 2017

Wonders ot the World

This project has a geography focus and teaches children about the geographical and historical significance of recognised ‘Wonders of the World’. At the heart of this project children write narrative stories set in a range of locations and develop additional skills in descriptive writing for leaflets, travel brochures and multimedia presentations.

In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by developing a tourism package for the British Tourist Authority presenting their own ‘Welsh 7’ wonders.

 In this project the children will learn:

About the locations of the ‘Wonders of the World’, including the countries that they are located in and about their geographical, historical and cultural significance;

About different categories of wonders of the world including the natural, ancient and modern world;

How to use maps, plans, data and information to find out about arange of places;

How to write narrative stories in a range of settings;

How to use geographical and historical knowledge in a creative way;

How to use multimedia and ICT to present information.

Summer Term/Tymor yr Haf 2017

This project has an art focus and explores the artwork of a variety of artists from different periods of history and develops children’s painting skills using a range of materials. At the heart of this project children learn how to write classically structured poetry and develop additional skills in the use of figurative language and descriptive vocabulary.

In the Innovate Stage children apply their skills and understanding by opening their own art gallery to exhibit their work on a local and national scale.

In this project the children will learn:

How the work of various artists throughout history has been used to express their views, and how artists’ work reflected the times they lived in;

How artists use various skills to work with different media;

How art and poetry can be used to express the views of the artist or poet;

How to write a poem on a theme using figurative and expressive language;

How to organise a display of artwork;

How to use ICT to find information, display information and create art;

How to use art and poetry to express feelings and opinions.
